About Me
 

Melissa Mullaney is a graduating graphic designer who enjoys working with analogue and digital styles and methods. Graduating with a BA (Hons) Digital Design and Advertising qualification and a love for design.  During her time being a student at The Northern School Of Art, she has found her love for typography and image making. Melissa’s portfolio consists of experimental image making and typography work with a mixture of past briefs and personal projects.

After graduating, Melissa hopes to carry on her education by studying an MA at The Northern School Of Art to define her style even more and to develop her skills further. Working with other students who have a passion of art and design to truly understand and define her speciality in digital design.

Melissa believes that the Final Major Project (FMP) is the most important brief throughout university as it’s the last chance which everyone gets to show their work and show how her skills have evolved and gotten stronger throughout the duration of the course.  Melissa decided to fight against fast fashion brands within this brief by creating and designing a sustainable clothing brand along with an accompanying website and clothing labels.

Melissa’s Final Major Project, is to educate the consumers of fast fashion brands to understand what they are contributing to. Consumer demand for garments is an ever growing problem and due to this fast fashion brands are manufacturing thousands of new garments each week in unsafe and unfair standards. Consumers of these brands have no idea what is happening in the manufacturing and are just fixated on how to get the latest trends and styles for a fraction of the price.  Melissa wants to educate these consumers through design to see if the consumers knew about how these garments were made would they think differently before purchasing.

In response to this brief, Melissa researched fast fashion brands and the dangers that come along with them. After understanding the problem, she began to experiment with logo and the name for the brand. Melissa chose the name DEAD END, as no matter how hard sustainable brands try to show consumers the damaging everlasting affects fast fashion has on everyone involved, consumers are never going to listen. With the logo design, Melissa decided on an urban aesthetic to the brand, the typeface used in the logo is a ransom note style. The manufacture of the garments were all made in sustainable ways down to the upcycled charity shop bought garments, using natural dyes such as blueberries and beetroot and the screen printing. Whilst screen printing, Melissa reused the same couple of designs to save resources and reusing the excess ink.  Melissa developed many experimentations for the garment designs from small informative illustrations to typographic experiments. Once settled on the design, Melissa began to develop these ideas which would catch the eye of consumer but would also be informative not forgetting what the problem she is trying to face. The website was created to inform the audience on how the garments could be recreated at home to upcycle clothes which they already own.
